2) Anthropogenic Ecology of the Tucson Basin
Led by: Dr. Suzanne Fish (Arizona State Museum)
Dr. Owen Davis (U of A Department of Geosciences)
Description:
We will follow a transect across the environmental zones of the Tucson Basin from the Santa Cruz River to the slopes of the Tortolita Mountains. Hohokam farming techniques along the transect ranged from mid-scale irrigation to floodwater farming to the capture of surface runoff on the driest slopes, reflected in a zonally distinctive anthropogenic ecology. The trip culminates with a visit to rockshelters with packrat middens that provide a record of environmental change as a background to prehistoric land use."
